Scans are the biggest PDFs there are. Set your limit and we lower image size only as much as needed.
A scanner or phone app saves each page as a high-resolution image, often in full color. Ten pages can easily reach 20 to 40 MB, while the same pages as a typed document would be well under 1 MB.
We render each page and save it at the highest resolution and quality that still fits your limit, trying several combinations automatically. The before and after preview shows the first page, so you can check that the text is still easy to read.
Color scans store three times as much information per pixel as grayscale. For contracts, letters, forms and statements, grayscale is just as readable and much smaller. Keep color only when it carries meaning, such as a colored stamp, a photo ID or a highlighted chart.
Scans are images to begin with, so text was not selectable before either. Compression does not change that.
It depends on page count and detail. As a rough guide, a clear page needs about 50 to 200 KB to stay readable.
