Where 1 MB limits come from

1 MB is a popular cap on online forms: tenant and loan applications, insurance claims, permit requests and many company portals. It is generous for typed documents and tight for scans with several pages.

Why your file might be rejected at 0.99 MB

Websites do not all count the same way. Some treat 1 MB as 1,048,576 bytes, others as 1,000,000 bytes. A file that your computer shows as 0.98 MB can still be too big for the second kind. We aim under both, so you do not have to guess.

How we compress

  1. Lossless pass: unused objects are removed and the file is rewritten more compactly. Text stays selectable.
  2. Image pass, only if needed: pages are saved as images at the highest resolution that still fits.
  3. You check the result: a before and after preview and the exact size against your limit.

Typical sizes, roughly

These ranges help you guess whether a file needs compression at all. Actual sizes vary with page count, color and scan settings.

  1. One-page typed letter saved as PDF: usually well under 200 KB.
  2. One page scanned in color: often 0.5 to 3 MB.
  3. Photo of a document taken with a phone: often 1 to 5 MB per page.
